The Ministry of Health announced the successful completion of Kuwait’s 18th heart transplant, performed on an 18-year-old patient at the Salman Al-Dibous Heart Center. This achievement reflects the advancement of medical services and the capability of specialized teams to carry out complex surgeries.
The ministry stated that the patient suffered from a congenital heart defect that led to advanced heart failure, accompanied by severe symptoms that significantly impacted his daily life. A heart transplant was deemed necessary after a donor heart became available and all required medical evaluations were completed to confirm compatibility between the donor organ and the recipient.
Dr. Bader Al-Ayad, Head of the Cardiology Department and Head of the Heart Failure and Heart Transplant Unit at Salman Al-Dibous Heart Center, said the success of the procedure resulted from the integrated efforts of medical and specialized teams. He emphasized that it represents an important step in strengthening the national heart transplant program and providing advanced treatment options for patients with advanced heart failure.
He added that the surgery was performed by Dr. Abdullah Al-Hadab and Dr. Mohammed Al-Ayyar, with participation from Dr. Khaled Al-Otaibi from Saudi Arabia, who oversaw the medical and immunological aspects of the procedure.
Dr. Al-Ayad praised the organ procurement team led by Dr. Sajja Sarour, noting that coordination among the organ procurement, heart transplant, surgical, anesthesia, and intensive care teams, along with nursing and technical staff, is a key factor in the success of such delicate procedures.
He expressed deep appreciation to the donor and his family for their humanitarian generosity, affirming that organ donation gives hope to patients on waiting lists, and that continued development of the program and enhanced collaboration among medical specialties contribute to expanding access to heart transplant services in Kuwait.
