Kuwait City, 2 Nov (KUNA) -- The Ministry of Health announced on Monday that Salman Al-Deeb Heart Center successfully performed the 18th heart transplant in Kuwait, marking a new milestone in the national heart transplant program and reflecting the advancement of medical services and the capability of specialized teams to carry out complex procedures.

In a press release, the ministry said the 18-year-old patient suffered from a congenital heart defect that led to advanced heart muscle failure and severe symptoms affecting his daily life, necessitating a heart transplant at the center after a donor heart became available and medical evaluations confirmed compatibility.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Abdullah Al-Hadab and Dr. Mohammed Al-Ayyar, with the participation of Dr. Khaled Al-Otaibi from Saudi Arabia, under the medical and immunological supervision of Dr. Bader Al-Ayyad.

Dr. Bader Al-Ayyad, head of the Cardiology Department and the Heart Failure and Transplant Unit at Salman Al-Deeb Heart Center, said the success of the operation was the result of integrated medical and specialized efforts, emphasizing that it represents an important step in consolidating the heart transplant program and providing advanced treatment options for patients with advanced heart failure.

Al-Ayyad praised the vital role of the organ procurement team led by Dr. Sajja Sarour, noting that coordination among the organ procurement, transplant, surgical, anesthesia, and intensive care teams, along with nursing and technical staff, forms the foundation for carrying out these highly precise and integrated procedures across all stages of care.

He expressed deep gratitude to the donor and his family for their noble humanitarian contribution, noting that organ donation gives hope to waiting patients and that continued development of the program and enhanced cooperation among various specialties contribute to expanding the benefits of this vital service in Kuwait.
