The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jassem Al-Bedawi, announced today that all GCC member states have unanimously endorsed the candidacy of the United Arab Emirates’ State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lana Nuseibeh, for the position of UN Secretary-General. In a press statement, Al-Bedawi said that supporting this candidacy reflects the GCC states’ commitment to backing multilateral international action and their keenness to contribute to strengthening the United Nations’ role in safeguarding international peace and security, in accordance with the purposes and principles of its Charter. He added that she also held the position of Vice-President of the UN General Assembly and chaired the Executive Board of UN Women, contributing, in cooperation with member states, to bridging differences and building consensus on a number of international issues. Al-Bedawi expressed confidence that Nuseibeh’s expertise and competence would contribute to enhancing the effectiveness and standing of the United Nations, and wished her success and good fortune.
