Moscow – Agencies: Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko affirmed that Moscow’s decision to grant political asylum to ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is final and irrevocable, noting that the current authorities in Damascus are aware of this. In an interview with the Russian website RTVI, Borisenko stated, “Our Syrian partners are well aware that Russia granted Bashar al-Assad political asylum for humanitarian reasons, and the current authorities in Damascus recognize that this Russian decision is final and irrevocable.” The granting of political asylum to al-Assad followed the collapse of his rule after a broad offensive launched by armed opposition factions against Syrian army positions in late November 2024. On December 8 of that year, the factions entered the capital, Damascus.
