Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borysenko affirmed that Moscow’s decision to grant former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad political asylum is final and irrevocable, noting that the current authorities in Damascus are aware of this.
In an interview with the Russian website RTVI, Borysenko said, “Our Syrian partners are well aware that Russia granted Bashar al-Assad political asylum on humanitarian grounds, and the current authorities in Damascus recognize that this Russian decision is final and irrevocable.”
The granting of political asylum to al-Assad came in the wake of the collapse of his rule, following a broad offensive launched by armed opposition factions against Syrian army positions in late November 2024. On December 8 of the same year, the factions entered the capital, Damascus, while al-Assad stepped down from the presidency and left the country.
