U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that it destroyed an Iranian sailing vessel that was conducting surveillance operations to target U.S. Navy ships in the Gulf of Oman.
In a statement posted on the X platform, CENTCOM said, “On October 6, U.S. forces destroyed an Iranian-linked sailing vessel that was conducting surveillance and targeting operations against U.S. Navy ships in the Gulf of Oman.”
The statement added that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has continued, over the past seven months, to indiscriminately target thousands of civilian mariners transiting international waters, as well as U.S. Navy warships.
It noted that U.S. forces assisted in the safe evacuation of ship crew members prior to the destruction of their vessels, and efforts are currently underway to repatriate them to their home countries.
Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command reaffirmed in a separate post that the U.S. sanctions regime imposed on Iran remains fully effective.
CENTCOM emphasized that commercial navigation continues to flow through the Strait of Hormuz despite Iran’s unjustified attacks on commercial vessels, thanks to the coordinated protection provided by U.S. forces and regional partners.
