A painting by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, missing for approximately 40 years, has been found in New York City. The artwork was discovered hidden under fur coats inside a closet in one of the apartments, and is valued at around $3 million.
CBS News reported two days ago that the painting was found by the niece of the previous owner, the late Betsy, while she was going through the contents of the apartment, revealing a rare work of art that had been out of public view since the 1980s.
The previous owner had received the painting as a gift from her mother, who purchased it in 1963 for $3,800, before deciding to hide it in the closet to avoid drawing attention to it.
Titled “Near Abiquiu, New Mexico,” the painting depicts the rolling hills of the American state in an abstract style. It bears O’Keeffe’s signature, while her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz, left a scrawl on its original box.
The painting is scheduled to be auctioned, with the proceeds earmarked to support an educational foundation and assist family members.
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) is considered one of the most prominent American artists of the 20th century, renowned for her nature-inspired works featuring flowers and desert landscapes. Her paintings enjoy widespread interest in the global art market.
