The Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced on Thursday that fires broke out on two oil tankers and a tugboat as they were transiting the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement, the Guard said that an oil tanker attempting to cross the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz during the night hours collided with a mine, causing a fire to break out on board. The statement added that a fire also erupted on a supertanker off the eastern side of the strait, and that a tugboat that had approached the tanker to assist in extinguishing the flames also caught fire.
In a related development, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard reported that it had captured two American “Lucas”-type suicide drones after safely bringing them down using electronic warfare systems in the region. No official comment was issued by the United States. The Guard clarified that the United States had developed these two drones under the name “Lucas” by copying the design of Iran’s Shahed-136 suicide drone.
On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran, resulting in thousands of casualties. Tehran responded with attacks on Israel and what it described as U.S. sites in the region. Last June, Washington and Tehran reached a memorandum of understanding regarding a ceasefire, but its implementation stalled and attacks resumed.
Current disputes between the two sides center on the terms for ending the war and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic corridor for global energy supplies.
