The Kuwaiti diving team, affiliated with the Environmental Volunteer Foundation, has warned boat owners, ship operators, and sea-goers about the weather fluctuations associated with the “Al-Ahimar” star season, urging them to exercise the highest levels of caution and to avoid sailing at night unless they have confirmed with official authorities that weather conditions are stable.
Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday, team leader Waleed Al-Fadl said that the “Al-Ahimar” season, known as “Al-Ahimar’s strike” or “Al-Ahimar’s squalls,” is linked to sudden weather changes that may affect maritime navigation safety in the Arabian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.
He explained that the season typically begins in mid-November and lasts for about 40 to 45 days, noting that Gulf sailors and ship captains traditionally avoided sailing during this period, securing their vessels in ports in anticipation of sharp weather changes.
Al-Fadl added that the main risks include strong winds and atmospheric disturbances accompanying the transition from autumn to winter. In some cases, northwesterly or westerly winds can reach speeds of 80 to 120 kilometers per hour, causing rough seas and waves reaching dangerous levels that threaten boats and fishing vessels.
He urged sea-goers to avoid sailing during nighttime hours due to reduced visibility and the difficulty of handling sudden weather changes, warning against navigating areas with strong water currents, particularly Ras Al-Ard, Ras Al-Jali’a, and Ras Al-Zour.
He emphasized the necessity of ensuring the efficiency of safety and rescue equipment on board, activating tracking and communication devices, and monitoring weather forecasts and official warnings before deciding to sail.
He noted that some sea-goers engage in fishing during this period in hopes of increasing their catch, but this may expose them to significant risks, pointing out that the Al-Ahimar season has historically been associated with maritime accidents and ship sinkings.
Al-Fadl stressed the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to protect lives and property, expressing appreciation for the efforts of the General Directorate of Coast Guard and the General Fire Force in providing services to sea-goers.
