Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister for Public Diplomacy, Ambassador Dr. Raed Qarmali, said on Monday that Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman will lead the Kingdom’s delegation at meetings hosted by the Iranian capital, Tehran, today between member states of the Mecca Agreement for Joint Defense and Iranian officials.
Qarmali, in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, explained that the visit and meetings are part of the agreement’s member states’ ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions among the parties to the current crisis and to encourage dialogue and diplomatic solutions.
He added that the Mecca Agreement meeting would be attended by Pakistani Army Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir and Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Director Ibrahim Kalin, with member states holding talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaee.
The Mecca Agreement for Joint Defense, also known as the Mecca Defense Pact, comprises three member states: Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan. It was signed in Mecca on August 7 last year.
