The Sheikh Abdullah Al-Nouri Charity Association signed a cooperation agreement today, Sunday, with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), valued at $500,000, aimed at providing food baskets and food assistance to displaced persons and those affected in Sudan.
Jassim Al-Nouri, the association’s general manager, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the agreement is part of humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of affected families and enhance food security. He added that the agreement also responds to the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan, marked by the ongoing conflict, declining income sources and livelihoods, and increasing difficulties for families in accessing food and basic necessities, which necessitates intensified relief interventions to ensure aid reaches its intended beneficiaries.
Al-Nouri explained that the agreement targets providing food assistance to approximately 47,000 people over a full year, helping to meet their basic needs, alleviate the living burdens faced by displaced and affected families, and strengthen their capacity to cope with the humanitarian and economic repercussions of the crisis.
He noted that Sudan is facing one of the world’s most severe humanitarian and food crises. UN estimates indicate that around 19.5 million people are suffering from acute food insecurity due to the continued conflict, displacement, and disruption of economic activities and essential services, highlighting the scale of the challenges and the urgent need to expand the humanitarian response.
He emphasized that cooperation with the WFP reflects the association’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with specialized UN agencies and leveraging their field and logistical expertise to deliver aid to the most vulnerable communities, thereby ensuring the efficiency of humanitarian interventions and maximizing the impact on target groups.
He pointed out that the 12-month duration of the agreement underscores the importance of sustaining food support in the face of protracted crises, reaffirming the association’s dedication to implementing humanitarian projects that address immediate needs while continuing support to help alleviate suffering and enhance family resilience.
Al-Nouri praised the contributions of philanthropists and their ongoing support for the association’s humanitarian projects, stressing that their generosity serves as a cornerstone for the association’s continued efforts to support affected communities, expand its partnerships, and broaden its relief initiatives, thereby reinforcing values of solidarity and compassion and enhancing Kuwait’s humanitarian presence worldwide.
For his part, Omar Al-Eissa, WFP Representative in Kuwait, told KUNA in a similar statement the importance of the cooperation agreement with the Al-Nouri Charity Association in enhancing the response to growing food needs in Sudan, commending the role of Kuwaiti charitable institutions in supporting UN efforts to alleviate the suffering of affected communities.
Al-Eissa said this partnership represents a model of integrated efforts between Kuwaiti charitable institutions and international organizations in addressing humanitarian crises, particularly in Sudan, where living and food conditions are extremely difficult, requiring unified efforts and intensified relief initiatives to reach the most vulnerable groups.
He added that cooperation with the association helps expand the scope of food assistance provided to displaced and affected families and strengthens efforts to mitigate the repercussions of food insecurity, expressing his appreciation for the association and its management for this humanitarian initiative, which reflects the commitment of Kuwaiti institutions to supporting those affected by crises.
He expressed his hope to expand the horizons of cooperation and strengthen future partnerships with the association to implement more
Among the initiatives that enhance food security and meet humanitarian needs, he praised the pioneering role of the State of Kuwait and its charitable institutions in supporting international humanitarian efforts and reinforcing the values of solidarity and mutual support among peoples.
