Expert Al-Mujaddadi: Modern analysis techniques open a new front in combating honey fraud

Mohammed Qasim Al-Majdadi, an expert in honey production and beekeeping and director of “Miracle of Healing” Company, stated that the rapid advancement in food analysis technologies is providing more precise tools to verify honey authenticity and detect fraud schemes that are difficult to identify through traditional methods. Al-Majdadi pointed to a recent study published in the journal Food Chemistry in 2026, which relied on metabolomics technology to develop a set of chemical indicators capable of distinguishing between genuine acacia honey and honey adulterated with sugars from various sources. He explained that researchers were able to identify groups of chemical indicators that achieved 100% accuracy in an independent validation set. The method also successfully detected samples adulterated with 20% honey derived from bees fed on beet or cane sugar, outperforming some comparative methods used in the study. Al-Majdadi emphasized that the significance of these findings extends beyond fraud detection; it also lies in confirming the global trend toward relying on honey’s chemical fingerprint rather than relying solely on appearance, color, and taste when assessing authenticity. He added that consumers cannot discern all details regarding honey’s composition or the source of certain additives with the naked eye, making specialized laboratory tests essential for scientific verification of quality and authenticity. Al-Majdadi stressed that developing faster and more accurate analytical tools represents a crucial step in protecting consumers, supporting pure products, and enhancing trust in the honey market, affirming that true quality requires scientific evidence, not merely visual impressions.
