Gaza: Ground Escalation and International Calls for a Permanent Ceasefire

Field developments in the Gaza Strip continue as air raids and artillery shelling persist in several areas, coinciding with escalating international and UN calls for a permanent ceasefire and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian and medical aid to residents across the Strip.

Areas in Khan Younis, in the south of the Strip, and neighborhoods in the north, including the areas around Al-Khazindar and Al-Safsaafa, witnessed new airstrikes and targeting that hit homes and gatherings, resulting in casualties, including one killed and several injured, according to available data.

Demolition and destruction operations, along with targeting of buildings, continued in border areas, parts of the coastal strip, and the northern sector, alongside intermittent clashes and mutual targeting along several contact lines in northern and southern Gaza.

The Israeli military announced the continuation of its military operations, which it described as precise, targeting what it said were field positions and command structures, while sporadic confrontations persist in several areas amid ongoing escalation.

UN data and reports indicate that a significant proportion of educational facilities in the Strip have been damaged or destroyed, alongside widespread damage to housing and infrastructure. This has led to an expansion of displacement and increased reliance on shelters and tents.

Concerns are also growing over the spread of diseases and the worsening environmental situation, given the damage to water and sewage networks, as well as rising needs among the most vulnerable groups, including children, the injured, and families who have lost their homes.

On the international level, calls to end the fighting and reach a permanent ceasefire continue, with emphasis on the need to increase the flow of humanitarian aid and provide basic necessities to the population.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres renewed his call for a ceasefire and a transition to a recovery phase, stressing the importance of providing humanitarian aid commensurate with the scale of needs in the Strip, within the framework of international efforts to end the war.

International and regional positions also focus on the necessity of resuming a political process leading to a comprehensive settlement, with continued emphasis on the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state as one of the pathways to achieve security and stability in the region.
