5,000 Detained in Student Protests in France

French authorities arrested more than 1,700 people the day before yesterday as part of the student-led protest movement, which has been marked by high school closures and acts of violence in recent days. Organizers called for continued mobilization on Tuesday in the absence of “concrete measures.”
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on Friday evening that 1,747 people had been arrested, bringing the total number of arrests since Monday to more than 5,000, following the closure of high schools.
