The Central Bank of Kuwait announced yesterday, Monday, the launch of the Kuwait Wage Protection and Payment System (KWPS), one of the strategic projects included in the second phase of the Kuwait National Payments System, which is managed and operated by the central bank.
In a press statement, the bank explained that the launch of the system comes as part of its efforts to develop the national payments infrastructure, enhance digital transformation, and improve the efficiency of the banking sector, thereby supporting the country’s direction toward building an advanced national payment ecosystem.
The system aims to create an integrated national platform for processing and monitoring salary transfer operations for private-sector employees through local banks, enabling secure and reliable electronic salary disbursements. It also enhances the ability to track payment transactions, raising levels of transparency and efficiency.
Under the system, the Central Bank of Kuwait assumes technical and operational management of the platform, while the Public Authority for Manpower is responsible for supervising and monitoring employers’ compliance with the Wage Protection System regulations, thereby strengthening coordination between the two entities and supporting governance and efficiency standards.
The system relies on modern technologies in payment systems and complies with the international financial message exchange standard (ISO 20022), contributing to the development of financial infrastructure, improving data quality, and facilitating data exchange among relevant stakeholders.
The bank noted that the system also helps reduce manual procedures and accelerate salary disbursement processes, while supporting financial inclusion and encouraging the use of banking services and electronic payment methods.
Furthermore, the system provides regulatory authorities with capabilities for real-time monitoring and early detection of non-compliance with salary payment obligations, alongside providing accurate data that can be relied upon to support decision-making and the formulation of policies related to the labor market.
The launch of KWPS comes within the national roadmap for developing the payments system, following the launch of the Kuwait Automated Clearing House (KACH) system last January, and the Kuwait Dispute Management System (KDMS) in February 2026.
The Kuwait Wage Protection and Payment System is the third system launched under the second phase of the Kuwait National Payments System, as part of the Central Bank of Kuwait’s efforts to modernize the national financial infrastructure and keep pace with global developments in the payments and digital financial services sector.
