The Kuwait Environment Protection Association (KEPA) launched the 17th edition of its awareness and educational program, “Green Schools,” coinciding with the start of the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year. The launch featured a series of interactive activities and lectures that link environmental concepts to the school curriculum and address key local and global challenges.
Jinan Bahzad, the Secretary-General and Director of Programs and Activities at the association, told KUNA that the program aims to instill concepts of sustainability and environmental responsibility among students. It achieves this through updated content that connects scientific knowledge with the environmental phenomena and issues surrounding them, transforming this knowledge into practical behaviors and practices applicable in daily life.
She explained that during the first semester, the program aligns with several environmental occasions, as well as topics related to seasonal changes in Kuwait, enabling students to learn about biodiversity and the importance of protecting natural resources and preserving green spaces.
Bahzad added that October activities focus, in conjunction with Greening Day, on the role of expanding green areas and preserving plants in improving the environment and quality of life, alongside raising awareness about biodiversity and seasonal changes.
She noted that the November program addresses the International Day for the Prevention of the Use of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. Through age-appropriate simplified content, it introduces students to the importance of protecting ecosystems and natural resources from the impacts of conflicts.
The program also aligns with international efforts to address climate change, coinciding with the convening of the 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Through activities that explain major climate issues, their impacts, and ways to adapt to and mitigate them, the program connects global topics to Kuwait’s local environmental reality.
In terms of daily behaviors, the program covers concepts of sustainable and responsible consumption. It raises awareness about reducing waste, reusing materials, recycling, and minimizing waste, while encouraging students to adopt more sustainable practices at school and at home.
Bahzad emphasized that the new edition of “Green Schools” presents environmental topics that support the school curriculum in a scientific and interactive manner. This approach enhances cooperation between the association and educational institutions and contributes to embedding a culture of responsible environmental behavior among the younger generation.
