Fastest Ebola outbreak in history spreads to two new health zones in Congo

Latest government data from the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Friday showed that the fastest-spreading Ebola virus outbreak in history has expanded to two new health zones in eastern Congo, bringing the total number of affected areas to 60. Data from the Ministry of Health indicated that the two new zones are Biena and Mangouridji, in North Kivu province, where the case fatality rate has exceeded the overall average of 48 percent, partly due to delays in response efforts. The ministry stated that the outbreak has recorded 5,794 confirmed cases, including 2,786 deaths, spreading at an unprecedented pace that outstrips efforts to monitor and slow its transmission.
