America Launches 'Largest Financial War Ever'... Iran Threatens to Halt Oil Supplies
The United States is preparing to launch “the largest financial war in history,” with an impending announcement of economic sanctions targeting Iran’s commercial partners. In response, Tehran has threatened to halt all oil exports from the Gulf “if the economic war continues.”
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to hold a press conference amid threats of disclosing even stricter measures against a country that has endured near-continuous economic sanctions since 1979. In an opinion piece published in the Financial Times, Bessent wrote, “As dawn breaks, the day of economic reckoning begins—the largest financial war ever waged against an adversary.”
The two warring nations have not launched any military strikes against each other for weeks, nor have they entered into serious talks to end the six-month-old conflict.
Iran stated that Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir will visit Tehran as part of efforts to restore peace and security in the region. A source in the Pakistani government said Munir would address the latest developments, including the US threat to impose new sanctions.
Three sources in Pakistan told Reuters that Munir spoke with Trump a few days before his talks in Tehran, coinciding with Washington’s preparations to announce a new plan to intensify economic pressure on Iran and its commercial partners. It remained unclear what transpired in the call between Munir and Trump. The White House press secretary’s office did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
The Pakistani military announced that Munir, who holds the positions of Army Chief and Commander of the Armed Forces, departed for Iran accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, as part of “Pakistan’s efforts to enhance regional peace and stability.” A military statement said Munir “will focus on strengthening efforts to achieve a peaceful, lasting, and comprehensive resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.”
The visit comes roughly six months after the outbreak of the war, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28. While the intensity of direct combat has subsided, negotiations remain stalled amid disagreements over the terms for ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
