Iran: Agreement with Oman on a maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz

Iran announced that ongoing negotiations with the Sultanate of Oman regarding navigation issues in the Strait of Hormuz have reached the final stages of review and drafting, amid reports that a temporary agreement to reopen the strait is imminent. The closure of the strait had triggered a major maritime crisis.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said yesterday that Iran and Oman had agreed on the geographic coordinates for a navigational route through the Strait of Hormuz, and that final touches were being put on a joint statement on the matter, conditional on the non-interference of specific third parties.

Baghaei added that such an agreement between Iran and Oman would not, by itself, guarantee security in this strategic waterway.

He described the negotiations between Tehran and Muscat as progressing, noting that if certain third parties do not obstruct the process, the joint statement between the two countries, which outlines key considerations and fundamental points of understanding, has reached the final stages of review and drafting.
