Al-Zafiri: Humanitarian work is no longer limited to field projects, but extends to media and creative initiatives
The Director General of Al-Rehma Global, Dr. Issa Al-Zafiri, affirmed that the association’s sponsorship of the second edition of the “Humanitarian Photography Grant,” held under the slogan “Water is Life,” stems from its mission to support distinctive humanitarian initiatives that highlight humanitarian issues and raise awareness about them, with water issues taking precedence. This is achieved by leveraging documentary photography as an impactful medium to convey the suffering of the most vulnerable communities and to enhance purposeful humanitarian efforts aimed at providing safe and clean water.
Al-Zafiri stated that Al-Rehma Global believes humanitarian work is no longer confined solely to implementing field projects, but extends to supporting media and creative initiatives that help convey the voices of the needy to the world. He noted that documentary photography has become one of the most prominent tools for influencing the humanitarian conscience and mobilizing support for just causes.
He added that Al-Rehma Global possesses extensive experience in implementing water and environmental sanitation projects in numerous countries, having contributed to drilling wells, establishing water networks, and executing developmental projects that have improved the lives of thousands of families. He emphasized that this field experience makes the partnership with the “Humanitarian Photography Grant” a natural extension of the association’s mission to serve humanity and achieve sustainable development.
Clarifying that water issues are among the most closely linked to human health, dignity, and stability, Al-Zafiri noted that providing clean water sources helps protect communities from broad health and environmental risks, while supporting their capacity to confront challenges and achieve sustainable development. He reaffirmed the importance of integrating international efforts to find sustainable solutions to this humanitarian crisis.
Al-Zafiri pointed out that the “Humanitarian Photography Grant – Water is Life” represents a pioneering initiative that combines visual creativity with humanitarian action. It supports ten documentary photography projects in several countries, alongside the production of more than 200 professional photographs, the organization of traveling photographic exhibitions, specialized workshops, and the publication of a book documenting experiences and humanitarian scenes. Additionally, it provides media tools and platforms to enhance the presence of humanitarian issues across various channels.
The Director General emphasized that the association views visual media as an active partner in humanitarian work, due to its ability to document reality and convey humanitarian messages authentically and impactfully. He noted that images can serve as a catalyst for initiating actions, strengthening support for humanitarian causes, and attracting further assistance to affected communities.
Al-Zafiri concluded his statement by reiterating that Al-Rehma Global’s sponsorship of the Humanitarian Photography Grant reflects its commitment to supporting initiatives that combine field work with media creativity.
