British Authority: Cargo Ship Attacked by Unknown Munitions Off the Coast of Oman

The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency reported that a cargo ship was attacked off the coast of the Sultanate of Oman. In a statement on Tuesday, the agency clarified that the incident occurred 20 nautical miles northeast of the Omani city of Khasab. It added that the cargo ship reported being hit by ammunition of an unknown type. The agency noted that relevant authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, urging ships navigating the area to exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity or situation.

The Strait of Hormuz is witnessing escalating tensions amid the war between the United States and Iran, raising concerns about disruptions to global navigation and energy supplies, despite diplomatic efforts to stabilize understandings regarding freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway. Between July 8 and 24, the United States launched attacks on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate by striking what it described as U.S. military facilities and equipment in Arab states, particularly Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

This followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran on June 18, and the commencement of negotiations to reach a final agreement, which later stalled due to disagreements over guarantees for the security and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical strategic corridors for global energy and trade supplies.

On February 28, the United States and Israel began an attack on Iran, which, according to Tehran, resulted in the deaths of more than 3,000 people. Iran responded with attacks it claimed killed American and Israeli personnel.
