Workplace Compliance Does Not Suit the Next Generation
Qiyas summary

The changing perspective of the new generation towards work requires flexibility and effective leadership.

The shaping of the future work environment will not be limited to artificial intelligence and digital transformation alone; it will also be influenced by shifts in individuals’ perceptions of authority, their definitions of success, and their criteria for evaluating whether an organization deserves their commitment. For managers from previous generations, understanding the psychological factors underlying employee behavior will become as crucial as understanding the technologies that are changing the nature of work.

One of the most significant shifts brought by the new generation is a growing desire for autonomy. Individuals in this cohort tend to feel they should have a degree of control over their decisions and be able to complete their tasks independently, with minimal supervision. When these employees encounter excessive oversight, unjustified rules, or limited opportunities for growth, their motivation to work may decline.

Younger employees often express their frustration with such practices openly, challenging procedures that seem unnecessary rather than accepting them simply because they have long been entrenched practices, as previous generations did.

Moreover, research conducted in the Gulf region offers an important cultural perspective. Studies on youth in the United Arab Emirates indicate that flexibility, supportive work environments, professional development, and meaningful work are fundamental factors in their career choices. Similarly, research involving “Generation Z” engineering students in Kuwait highlighted the importance of authentic and inclusive leadership, financial security, autonomy, and career development.

These findings suggest that younger employees do not reject traditional expectations simply for the sake of opposition; rather, they seek to balance their aspirations for growth and autonomy with their need for stability and reliable leadership.

Accordingly, it can be said that Generation Z does not possess entirely different personality traits; rather, changes in social and technological environments influence how familiar psychological traits manifest in the workplace context. Research to date indicates that the next generation of employees may be more inclined to question existing procedures, particularly when rules appear arbitrary or inconsistent.

Thus, the challenge for older-generation managers lies in providing autonomy without relinquishing accountability, offering flexibility without negatively impacting performance, fostering open communication without undermining professional standards, and accepting the review of procedures that have lost their relevance without viewing it as a personal slight. However, achieving this transformation requires a fundamental shift in current work practices, necessitating a long-term plan for soft-skills training that cannot be accomplished overnight.

The transition from compliance-based management to leadership grounded in an understanding of human psychology does not mean making work easier or granting employees the freedom to impose all their conditions; rather, it means understanding the motivations that drive individuals to complete their tasks, lose their enthusiasm, adapt to changes, or resist them, and then leveraging this understanding to practice leadership more effectively.

In the current work environment, the most effective managers may not be those who exercise the greatest degree of control, but rather those who know how to leverage the diverse capabilities of individuals, draw out their best performance, and simultaneously maintain the standards upon which their organizations rely.
