The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has decided to return to organizing the Africa Cup of Nations every two years, reversing its previous decision to hold the tournament once every four years.

In a statement, CAF said that its Executive Committee unanimously approved the restoration of the previous format, which had been the norm for the competition, following a lack of broad support for the decision to change its frequency.

The previous plan called for the Africa Cup of Nations to be held every four years, alongside the launch of the Africa Cup of Nations every two years. However, CAF clarified that the new tournament would require several years to generate sufficient revenue to support football across the continent.

CAF President Patrice Motsebe emphasized that the decision aims to protect the interests of African football, the 54 national associations, and African professional players playing abroad.

Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are scheduled to host the next edition in 2027, with subsequent tournaments set for 2028, 2031, and 2033.
