A Chinese research team announced a new world record in data transmission capacity over optical fiber, after successfully conducting a real-time, bidirectional data transfer experiment with a capacity of 3.2 petabits per second using multi-core optical fiber.
Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday that the experiment was conducted using a 10.3-kilometer-long optical fiber containing 24 cores, surpassing the previous record of 2.5 petabits per second set by the same team last March.
Researchers clarified that the achieved capacity theoretically equates to the ability to transmit more than 20,000 4K films in one second, an illustrative estimate of the volume of data that can be transferred, not the result of an actual film download test.
The experiment involved a research team from Chinese institutions specializing in information and communications technology and optical fiber, employing technologies that enable data transmission across multiple channels in parallel, with the aim of increasing the overall capacity of communication networks.
According to researchers, this achievement represents progress in developing high-capacity optical transmission technologies that could support future communication networks and data centers.
