- Condemned Jordanian shelling of Daraa and violation of its airspace without prior coordination
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its strong condemnation and rejection of the Jordanian airstrikes that targeted several sites in Daraa Governorate yesterday, along with the accompanying violation of Syrian airspace without prior coordination, which resulted in casualties and injuries.
In a statement issued today, the ministry affirmed the deep, historic, and firm fraternal relations between Syria and Jordan, noting that they are currently experiencing their best phases of mutual understanding and shared commitment to the interests of both peoples. It expressed deep concern over recent security and field developments along the shared border.
The ministry stressed that the shelling and the accompanying breach of Syrian airspace constitute an unacceptable violation of national sovereignty and the principles of good neighborliness, and are contrary to the frameworks of cooperation and coordination between the two countries. It firmly rejected this behavior in all respects and under any pretext.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry reiterated its strong condemnation of the attack on St. George’s Church in Jordan a few days ago, describing it as a “treacherous and criminal targeting” and a blatant assault on religious and human values, as well as an attempt to undermine Jordan’s social fabric.
It expressed its condolences to the families of the victims of the shelling and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The ministry affirmed its conviction that suspicious parties are seeking to sour the fraternal relations between the two countries, incite fitna (discord), heighten tensions, and ignite crises between them.
It announced that work is underway, in direct coordination with Jordan, to establish an urgent joint field and security committee aimed at halting field violations and transgressions, preventing their recurrence, securing and controlling the shared border, and ensuring full security and field coordination.
The ministry stressed that this step stems from the wisdom of the leaderships of both countries and their commitment to preserving fraternal relations and blocking any attempts to tamper with their security or shed the blood of their citizens.
