The White House announced on Friday that First Lady Melania Trump has reached an agreement for a temporary ceasefire in the city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine, effective October 29, aimed at allowing the delivery of humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians through a safe corridor.
In a statement released by her White House office, Melania Trump said the situation in the frontline city is extremely dire, warning of an impending humanitarian catastrophe threatening its residents, most of whom are elderly and suffering from severe shortages of medical care, medicines, food, and clean water.
She noted that residents are facing power outages, living among mined roads, and enduring repeated military attacks, emphasizing that her intervention facilitated arrangements for delivering aid and evacuating the elderly.
She added that civilian officials from Russia and Ukraine will jointly visit residents in their homes to assess their humanitarian needs, while transportation and coordinated support will be provided for those wishing to leave for destinations of their choice, whether within Ukraine or toward Russia.
Melania Trump revealed that a neutral American media organization has been secured to accompany Russian and Ukrainian teams in the field and document the evacuation process, ensuring respect for residents’ wishes and the implementation of the agreed arrangements.
The statement clarified that the First Lady, through a special representative, held direct communications with both Russian and Ukrainian leadership and mediated between the two sides to reach a limited ceasefire agreement, including defining its objectives, timing, implementation mechanisms, and technical conditions.
It noted that Oleshky, located in the Kherson region on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River, has remained on the frontline since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war, leading to the displacement or evacuation of most of its residents. Approximately 90% of the city was flooded following the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.
Kherson is one of four Ukrainian regions—alongside Luhansk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia—that Russia declared it annexed in 2022 following referendums rejected by Ukraine as illegal.
