- General Security confirms 34 cases admitted to hospitals... and the Interior Ministry describes the attack as terrorist, continuing pursuit of perpetrators
The Jordanian General Security Directorate announced on Friday that the death toll from the terrorist attack targeting a funeral in Karak Governorate in the south of the country has risen to seven, up from six in the previous count, while 27 injured individuals are receiving treatment, according to the latest figures released during a press conference held in the governorate.
Jordan News Agency (Petra) quoted General Security Director Major General Dr. Obaidalla Al-Maaytah, during the press conference, stating that hospitals admitted 34 cases, including seven fatalities and 27 injured patients receiving treatment.
Al-Maaytah affirmed that security agencies are continuing their investigations to hold the perpetrators accountable, emphasizing that Jordan “will remain an oasis of security and stability,” and that authorities will strike with an iron fist anyone attempting to undermine the security of the Kingdom.
He clarified that discussing the names of suspects is premature, noting that security agencies possess information and are continuing work on the case, without being able to specify a deadline for the conclusion of investigations, given that it depends on the nature of the situation.
For his part, Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen Al-Farayeh, during the press conference, described the incident in Karak Governorate as a “terrorist operation,” characterizing the event as unprecedented.
Al-Farayeh stated that security agencies are working around the clock to apprehend the perpetrators, emphasizing that it is too early to discuss their identities or affiliations, or to confirm the involvement of any internal or external entities in the attack.
In a related development, Public Prosecutor Judge Dr. Hassan Al-Abdellat clarified that the publication ban in the case of the Hamoud Church in Karak Governorate does not extend to condemning the crime or public debate regarding it, but is limited to investigative procedures and discussions of evidence and proofs, in order to safeguard procedural integrity and ensure justice.
Al-Abdellat, in a statement to Petra, said the decision aims to protect the dignity of the victims and prevent the circulation of video clips showing them in harsh conditions, as well as to curb the spread of false and misleading news and hate speech on social media platforms.
He affirmed that the publication ban targets protecting the course of justice and accelerating the identification of those responsible for the crime, while preventing the dissemination of any information that could affect the progress of the investigation.
