Stephen Butler: Leading the team that resumed the embassy’s operations last June was one of the most proud moments of my career.
The roots of the peoples’ relations date back to 1911... and today they have transcended diplomatic partnership.
The Acting Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, Stephen Butler, affirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening its ties with Kuwait and standing shoulder to shoulder with it in defending its security and sovereignty, describing U.S.-Kuwaiti relations as “transcending diplomatic partnership to embody a solid friendship based on trust, cooperation, and confronting shared challenges.”
This came during a celebration hosted by the embassy marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, attended by Foreign Minister Sheikh Jaraah Jaber Al-Ahmad, along with several ambassadors, diplomatic corps members, and representatives of companies and brands.
In press statements on the sidelines of the event, held under the banner “Freedom 250,” Butler noted that this year also marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which began in 1961, while the roots of relations between the two peoples trace back to 1911 with the establishment of the “American Mission Hospital in Kuwait.” He added that the United States stood by Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion in 1990 and led the international coalition that contributed to its liberation in 1991, pointing out that in recent months the two countries have continued to stand together to defend Kuwait’s security and people, demonstrating the strength of their relationship through difficult historical milestones.
Butler clarified that the embassy resumed its operations and reopened last June after suspending activities for approximately four months for security reasons, expressing his pride in leading the team that returned to Kuwait to reopen the embassy, and describing that moment as “one of the most proud moments” of his life.
In his speech at the event, Butler highlighted that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Kuwait on June 24 and his meetings with His Highness the Amir of Kuwait and the Foreign Minister reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to its relations with Kuwait and the importance of the partnership between the two countries. He said that the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States represents an occasion to celebrate the values upon which his country was built.
“Corvette” 1964... An Icon of the Celebration
Butler noted that the occasion celebrates American innovation and creativity, featuring a display of classic cars and motorcycles that reflect a facet of American culture and history, including a 1964 Corvette model, which he described as “one of the icons of American innovation.” He explained that it is manufactured in Bowling Green, Kentucky, his home state, and expressed his joy at celebrating this occasion in Kuwait alongside a car linked to his home state.
