The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced on Wednesday the imposition of new sanctions related to Iran, targeting five individuals, four companies, and nine vessels, as part of measures aimed at entities and networks linked to Iran’s shipping sector.

The Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) stated that the sanctions included a legal services firm operating in Panama and Greece, along with five individuals associated with it, as well as three other companies registered in Singapore, Panama, and the United Arab Emirates.

It further noted that the sanctions involved listing nine vessels on the U.S. sanctions list, seven of which fly the Panamanian flag.

Concurrently with the sanctions, the office issued two general licenses permitting the conclusion of specific transactions with the targeted entities and the execution of limited activities related to vessel safety, environmental protection, and cargo discharge, under specified conditions.

In this context, Reuters quoted the U.S. Department of the Treasury as saying that the targeted legal services firm had provided support for Iranian shipping operations over the years.

The agency reported that the U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) had issued an administrative request for information as part of an investigation into a Greek bank suspected of having ties to Iran, without disclosing its name.

The network also requested information from six other European banks regarding their relationships with Iranian financial institutions subject to U.S. sanctions.
