More than 200 firefighters and paramedics participated in extinguishing the blaze at an abandoned warehouse and preventing it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
Firefighting teams in New York City successfully protected a historic church featured in the film “The Godfather” from a massive fire that broke out late Saturday evening at an abandoned warehouse on Staten Island, prompting the involvement of more than 200 firefighters and paramedics.
American CBS News reported that the fire started in the Mount Loretto area, where firefighters faced intense flames that caused severe damage to the building and led to the collapse of its roof, amid fears that the blaze would spread to nearby structures.
The network quoted Kevin Woods, New York City’s Fire Commissioner, as saying that crews managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, including the historic church, two schools, and a senior care center.
NBC New York reported that one firefighter and one civilian sustained minor injuries, noting that the warehouse had been abandoned for at least five years.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
