Kenyan health authorities announced that the number of Ebola cases in the country has risen to eight, following the detection of a new infection linked to the first confirmed case in Kenya.
Patrick Amoth, the Director General of Health in Kenya, said in a press statement that tests conducted on 38 individuals revealed one additional infection, bringing the total number of cases to eight.
He explained that the newly infected person exhibited symptoms including fever, headache, and muscle pain, and that the transmission likely occurred due to contact with the country’s first Ebola patient.
Earlier this month, Kenya recorded its first confirmed case of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The individual had contracted the disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo before traveling by land to neighboring Uganda, and then by air to Kenya, where he later died.
Kenyan health authorities continue to trace individuals who came into contact with the first patient during his travels, in an effort to contain the spread of the infection.
Efforts to combat the outbreak face additional challenges, as there is currently no specific vaccine or targeted treatment available for the Bundibugyo strain.
