Public Works Minister Dr. Noura Al-Mushaan emphasized the importance of cooperation and coordination among government entities to achieve the public interest, particularly in services that concern citizens, commending the efforts of entities that participated in rehabilitating the Mishref wastewater pumping station and enhancing its operational readiness.
This came in a press statement by Al-Mushaan on Sunday, on the sidelines of honoring the joint government team that handled the emergency situation at the Mishref station after it went out of service last January.
Al-Mushaan clarified that the honoring ceremony recognizes the efforts of government entities and their cooperation with the Ministry of Public Works in completing the station’s rehabilitation works and putting it into operation, praising the efforts made by participating teams to restore its service.
The ceremony, held at the ministry building, featured a presentation outlining the stages of handling the breakdown, from initial measures through maintenance and rehabilitation works, to the station’s full-power restart.
For his part, Engineering Director at the Ministry Anwar Al-Balushi confirmed that maintaining the areas covered by the Mishref station was among the top priorities during the crisis response, given the high population density in those areas.
Al-Balushi, in a statement to journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, noted that the station serves 14 residential areas, including Salmiya, Hawalli, Rumaythiya, Salwa, Jabriya, and Sabah Al-Salem, as well as part of the South Surra area and other regions.
He pointed out that the joint government team, formed at the beginning of the crisis, included the Kuwaiti Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior represented by the Civil Defense and General Fire Force, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, the Kuwait Municipality, and the Ministry of Health, with the aim of coordinating efforts and integrating roles to handle the emergency.
He explained that works began by closing inflows to the station, a process that took 45 days and involved shutting down all conduits leading to it, paving the way for maintenance, rehabilitation, and operational preparation.
Al-Balushi stressed that the strategic importance of the Mishref station, which accounts for approximately 20% of the country’s sewage system, necessitated accelerating maintenance and rehabilitation works to restore its service as soon as possible.
He added that joint efforts resulted in completing rehabilitation works three months ahead of the scheduled timeline, with partial operation of the station beginning last August as part of readiness testing phases.
He clarified that after completing trial operations and confirming the station’s readiness, it was fully restarted on September 22 with an operational capacity of 230,000 cubic meters per day.
He noted that the station is currently operating at full capacity, pumping wastewater to the Aradhiya station, from where it is sent to the treatment plant in Sulaybiya, emphasizing that its restart represents a significant step in restoring the efficiency of the country’s sewage system.
The ceremony honored the Kuwaiti Armed Forces represented by the Supply and Logistics Authority, the Ministry of Interior represented by the Civil Defense, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, the General Fire Force represented by the Combat Sector, and Kuwait Oil Company.
