- Passage through the strait remains unsafe... Iran has not provided information enabling its reopening

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, confirmed on Friday that Iran has not provided any information enabling the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, noting that the passage of oil tankers and commercial vessels through the strait remains unsafe.

In statements to Sky News Arabia, Dominguez said that the priority is to reopen the strait and ensure the safety of maritime navigation within it, clarifying that the organization is participating in negotiations aimed at resuming ship traffic through this vital waterway.

He added that more than 100 ships have been attacked in the Strait of Hormuz since the beginning of the war, pointing out that naval mines have not yet been removed from the strait, and that clearance operations will resume immediately after the conflict ends.

He affirmed that the organization is working to provide assistance to sailors located in the strait, expressing his hope to ensure their safety.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for energy trade, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, situated between Iran to the north and the Sultanate of Oman to the south.

The strait is approximately 34 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, with ships passing through two navigational channels, each about 3 kilometers wide, separated by a buffer zone.
