US company Tesla unveiled a redesigned version of its electric sports car, the Roadster, equipped with propulsion technologies developed in collaboration with SpaceX. These technologies enabled a prototype to jump over other vehicles and perform aerial maneuvers during a demonstration held in Texas, US.
The company showcased the two-seater vehicle during the event, which took place on Thursday at a SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas. The car ascended a curved ramp, drove upside down using a suction system, spun in the air, and landed with the assistance of integrated thrusters.
The car also executed a jump over a group of Tesla vehicles, including the Cybertruck and the electric Semi truck, demonstrating the capabilities of the new propulsion system.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk clarified that the car was developed through collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX engineers, with the aim of equipping it with technologies that enable unconventional maneuvers.
According to the specifications announced by the company, the Roadster can accelerate from zero to approximately 97 kilometers per hour in less than a second. Its top speed exceeds 370 kilometers per hour, and its driving range exceeds 480 kilometers per charge.
The company revealed three versions of the car: Performance, Thrust, and Rocket. The latter version features a single seat and 10 compressed gas thrusters, enabling aerial maneuvers.
Tesla announced that reservations are now open for the Performance version with a deposit of $50,000, and for the Thrust version with a deposit of $250,000. The Rocket version is available by invitation only, with final prices for the car not yet announced.
Musk stated that the company targets starting production of the Roadster in 2028, following a series of delays since the unveiling of the new generation prototype in 2017.
Despite the maneuvers performed by the prototype, it remains unclear how many of these capabilities will be available in commercial versions, or whether they can be used on public roads.
