Sheikha Al-Ibrahim, Director of the Public Relations and Media Department and official spokesperson for the Public Authority for Environment, affirmed on Wednesday the Authority’s commitment to encouraging environmental initiatives that foster partnerships with educational institutions and contribute to raising environmental awareness among students.
Speaking at the launch ceremony of the “Private Universities Challenge for E-Waste Recycling” initiative, on behalf of Acting Director General Nof Baha’ani, Al-Ibrahim noted that the initiative, organized by the “Eco” incubator for environmental projects and targeting students of private universities, underscores the importance of engaging youth in environmental issues and enhancing their role in adopting and disseminating sustainable practices within university and community settings.
She added that involving youth in such initiatives represents a genuine investment in building environmental awareness among a generation capable of driving change, transforming sustainability concepts from theoretical principles into daily practices and innovative, implementable projects.
Al-Ibrahim emphasized that the Authority places significant importance on waste management across all categories, including e-waste, which requires scientifically sound and regulatory-compliant handling to mitigate its impacts on the environment and public health, while also promoting the reuse and recycling of recoverable materials.
This effort aligns with the National Strategy for Integrated Waste Management, which aims to develop a more efficient and sustainable waste management system in the country by reducing waste generation, enhancing reuse and recycling, improving resource utilization efficiency, and minimizing the volume of waste sent to landfills.
She highlighted that achieving sustainability and integrated waste management goals requires coordinated efforts among government entities, educational institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations, alongside active youth participation as key partners in driving change and contributing to a more sustainable future.
