5.7-magnitude earthquake strikes Indonesian city of Sukabumi

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Sukabumi in West Java province, Indonesia, on Sunday.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics stated that the earthquake occurred 193 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi city, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Earthquakes regularly hit various parts of Indonesia, which lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone where several tectonic plates meet, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activity.

It is worth noting that a 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck Aceh province in 2004, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Indonesia.
