Washington Files Additional Charges Against Maduro and His Wife for Torture Conspiracy
The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Thursday that additional charges have been brought against former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who have been detained in the United States since January. The new charges relate to conspiracy to commit acts of torture.
In a statement, the department said the new charges were included in an amended indictment unsealed on Thursday, adding to previous accusations involving drug trafficking, and the smuggling of cocaine and weapons.
The statement quoted U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche as saying that since the arrest of Maduro and his wife, the Department of Justice has been working to uncover the full scope of the alleged crimes they committed against the Venezuelan and American peoples.
