Freedom of Expression on Social Media: A Right or a Responsibility?

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, yet its use can sometimes lead to insult and defamation of others. This highlights the tension between an individual’s right to express their opinion and others’ right to protect their dignity and reputation. Kuwaiti law criminalizes certain forms of insult and defamation via communication channels to shield individuals from harm. Some argue that such laws are necessary to curb excesses, while others contend that their application should not restrict legitimate freedom of expression.

The importance of the law lies in striking a balance between freedom and responsibility, thereby protecting individuals from insult without infringing on their right to voice their opinions. This balance is ensured by the state through evolving legislation in laws related to journalism and publishing, aimed at safeguarding people’s dignity, fostering respect, and enhancing social cohesion within society.
