Al-Khafji... The Pearl of the Border and the Future of Development

Every city has its own story, and the story of Al-Khafji is intertwined with the Kuwaiti consciousness through bonds of land, history, and shared destiny.

This peaceful city, situated on the shores of the Arabian Gulf, has never been merely a border crossing point we pass through in transit; rather, it is a lifeline that embodies the depth of Kuwaiti-Saudi fraternal relations since the historic Al-Uqair Agreement of 1922, through shared epic chapters, the export of the first crude oil shipment in 1961, up to the liberation campaigns of 1991.

Today, Al-Khafji is reshaping its identity and future, donning a promising developmental mantle and transcending its historical role as the energy capital via the "Joint Al-Khafji Operations." An observer of the city’s steps under Saudi Vision 2030 clearly sees how the "Pearl of the Border" is transforming into a regional investment and tourism hub attracting Gulf and global capital.

Perhaps the most prominent evidence of this transformation is the launch of the project by "Gulf Coast Real Estate Development Company" (a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund), which aims to build an integrated coastal destination spanning 20 square kilometers, with a 10-kilometer waterfront, encompassing thousands of residential and luxury units, marinas, and hotels, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2030.

This development serves not only the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but also opens a tourism outlet and a fertile investment environment for Kuwaiti investors and property owners, particularly given the package of "humanizing cities" projects and beach developments being implemented by the Eastern Province Municipality at a cost exceeding 73 million riyals, and with Kuwaiti investors already entering major resort and hotel projects in the city.

Al-Khafji today is no longer just a transient oil hub; it is a Gulf success story taking shape at the border, proving that true development is what transforms geographical advantages into sustainable opportunities for future generations.
