Ronaldo breaks his silence: 'This is the truth about what happened with coach Jorge Jesus'

Portuguese national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo broke his silence regarding the recent crisis with head coach Jorge Jesus, revealing in a lengthy statement posted on his Instagram account the details of what transpired during the last training camp and the reasons that led him to leave the squad, while simultaneously acknowledging his mistake and apologizing to the Portuguese public and his teammates.

Ronaldo stated that, as he had promised, he decided to recount the circumstances of the incident himself and directly. He clarified that after the 2026 World Cup, he had prepared a message for the Portuguese people containing the words he intended to address them with when he decided to permanently retire from the national team.

He added that during the return journey from the United States following the World Cup, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation asked him to reconsider his decision to leave, affirming the federation’s desire for him to continue with the national team. Ronaldo noted that the federation president later asked for his opinion on Jesus, who was among the candidates considered for the head coach position. Ronaldo informed him that he viewed Jesus as the suitable choice, which is why he was pleased with the announcement of his appointment.

Ronaldo explained that Jesus contacted him a few days later and requested a personal meeting. They met at the "City of Football," where the coach emphasized his reliance on Ronaldo and stated that his presence was essential to his project. Jesus presented a participation plan that involved playing in the first and last matches, with three or four substitutions in each game to manage his physical condition.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus suggested that he not travel with the team to Norway and Denmark, proposing instead that he play in the first match, remain in Portugal, and then rejoin the squad before the match scheduled at the Dragão Stadium. However, Ronaldo immediately rejected the proposal, considering that staying in Portugal while serving as team captain would not set a good example. The coach subsequently agreed with his viewpoint.

Ronaldo pointed out that Simão Coutinho, the sporting director of Saudi club Al Nassr, attended that meeting, noting that he was the person Jesus had worked with during the previous season and one of the officials responsible for signing him in 2025.

Ronaldo revealed that Jesus visited him at his home in Lisbon, at the coach’s request, on the eve of the training camp. He described their conversation as calm, with continued agreement on the principles previously reached.

He added that he participated in the Alvalade match and did not object to being substituted; instead, he personally placed the captain’s armband on Bruno Fernandes’ arm, without imagining that he might be taking his final steps as a player and captain of the national team. He affirmed that what mattered to him at that time was achieving victory.

Regarding the Norway match, Ronaldo said that one of Jesus’s assistants informed him during lunch that the coach wanted to speak with him. He was surprised when Jesus asked if he was ready to play for 30 minutes. He added that this was not part of his physical recovery plan or training, as he was scheduled to play in the match on the fourth of the month at the Dragão Stadium. Nevertheless, he agreed, and Jesus informed him that he needed to prepare to participate.

He continued, “The rest is known to everyone,” explaining that he began warming up during the halftime break and continued waiting without being put into the match by the coach, considering that Jesus had not kept his promise.

Ronaldo acknowledged his mistake in not going to greet the fans after the match, affirming that the responsibility lay solely with him. He apologized to the Portuguese fans who supported the team in the stadium and to those who may have traveled to watch him and felt disappointed.

He clarified that, 48 hours later, he held a frank meeting with Jesus and Philippe Coutinho. According to his account, they agreed to resolve the issue by having the coach clarify the truth of what happened at the press conference: that Ronaldo had not requested to participate, that the camp’s plan was Jesus’s own suggestion, and that including him in the warm-up without then bringing him on was a mistake that would not be repeated.

He added that the meeting ended with Jesus asking for a hug and promising to say at the press conference what they had agreed upon, with the understanding that the matter would be closed and that Ronaldo would not play against Denmark, before facing FC Porto at the Dragão.

He revealed that another meeting took place via video conference between Jesus, Coutinho, and Tiago Cavenati, during which the agreed points were summarized. A short memorandum was prepared, which Ronaldo said he reviewed and approved before handing it to the coach at his request.

However, Ronaldo insisted that what occurred at the press conference deviated from what had been agreed. He said he heard words and a harsh tone that he did not believe he deserved, and that Jesus displayed an attitude he had not shown during their private conversation the previous day.

Ronaldo published the points he said he had agreed to before the press conference. These included Jesus’s confirmation that he alone was responsible for deciding the participation plan for the Portugal captain this season, and that Ronaldo had approved it, had not questioned his choices, and had been ideal, loyal, and professional.

According to Ronaldo, the memorandum also included the coach’s acknowledgment that the Norway match was not part of the plan made for him, but that Jesus felt he had physically recovered from the first match and had informed him of the potential need for him. It also included his admission that asking him to warm up and then not bringing him on was a mistake, and that he would not repeat it.

It also contained Jesus’s affirmation of his desire for Ronaldo to continue with the national team, and stated that the incident of not greeting the fans was a moment of frustration that did not erase his long career with Portugal or his relationship with the supporters.

Ronaldo said that none of these points required the coach to apologize to him, but he considered the incident the second time Jesus had failed to keep his word. Therefore, he decided to leave the camp without waiting for what he described as another promise that might not be fulfilled.

The Portugal captain emphasized that over nearly 25 years, he had never interfered in any technical or tactical decision made by any coach he played under for the national team. He stressed his respect for decisions, but added: “When they do not keep their word with me, I feel that my place is not there.”

At the same time, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates for leaving the camp, acknowledging that he should not have done so, despite what he described as a loss of trust in the coach’s word, and affirming that he took full responsibility.

He also stressed that the Portuguese Football Federation should evaluate his actions and punish him accordingly, considering that there should be no mitigating circumstances for the sanction. He said that being the team captain was an aggravating factor, because rules must apply to everyone regardless of any player’s status.

Ronaldo also addressed the idea of organizing a farewell match for him, confirming that there would be one or more matches to bid him farewell at the appropriate time. However, he stressed that his current focus with the national team was on competition, not on farewell.

He recalled his father’s death while he was at a national team camp, saying that he had then decided to stay until the end of the next day’s match, and that he had done for his country what he would not have done for any club.

He concluded by affirming that if he was in good physical condition and playing for his club, and after serving any imposed sanction, he would remain available, as always, to compete and win the Portugal national team shirt. He added: “This, believe me, is the truth in its entirety.”
