US warns Ethiopia and Eritrea: The region cannot withstand another military conflict and humanitarian crisis
The United States has called on Ethiopia and Eritrea to exercise restraint and return to dialogue, warning that escalating tensions between the two countries could lead to a new conflict whose repercussions the Horn of Africa region cannot bear.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the Horn of Africa “cannot withstand another military conflict and humanitarian crisis,” amid rising tensions between Addis Ababa and Asmara.
He added that a conflict between the two countries would threaten existing U.S. cooperation with both Ethiopia and Eritrea on issues of shared interest.
Pigott urged the two countries to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of their neighbors, exercise maximum restraint, and return to dialogue and cooperation in accordance with the peace agreement signed between Ethiopia and Eritrea in 2018.
The U.S. State Department spokesperson emphasized that peace based on dialogue is the path to achieving sustainable security, economic growth, and prosperity in the region.
