Two Earthquakes of Magnitude 5.9 and 5.6 Strike Indonesia

Two earthquakes measuring 5.9 and 5.6 magnitude struck two regions in Indonesia early Sunday, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The first earthquake, measuring 5.9 magnitude, hit an area near Sumba Island. The USGS located its epicenter 39 kilometers west-southwest of Tamblaka in Indonesia, at a depth of 46 kilometers.

The quake occurred at 22:55:55 UTC on Saturday, which corresponds to 01:55:55 early Sunday Kuwait time.

In a separate assessment, the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.1, locating its epicenter at sea 14 kilometers southwest of Kodi in southwestern Sumba, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The agency stated that residents in several areas of Sumba and Manggarai felt the tremors to varying degrees. Shaking intensity reached level V in western Sumba, ranged between levels IV and V in western Manggarai, and between levels III and IV in eastern Sumba.

Later, the USGS recorded another earthquake measuring 5.6 magnitude, located 80 kilometers south of Banda Aceh in Indonesia, at a depth of approximately 69.7 kilometers.
