Nabil Al-Akhlaq Seeks Forgiveness for Others

Dialogues

A person of noble character is one who possesses good morals, especially those who exhibit ethical qualities that have become rare in today’s turbulent world. Naturally, a person of noble character is one who seeks excuses for others, is the most tolerant, and specifically refrains from suspecting others of ill intent due to narcissism, arrogance, or a condescending attitude toward those who differ from him.

Among the behaviors that a person of noble character should exhibit in seeking excuses for others, we mention the following:

- Seeking excuses for those who cease communication: Life in today’s turbulent world is rarely free from difficulties, and personal, family, and social challenges are often extremely severe. A person of noble character excuses those who suddenly cut off contact without prior warning, yet continues to maintain communication with them, especially if they are a sincere and cherished friend. He also excuses blood relatives and kin who have been absent for extended periods for reasons known only to God, Exalted is He, and to the individuals themselves. Had he not done so, he would not be considered a person of noble character.

Breaking News

- Not listening to gossip: A person of noble character does not backbite anyone, and specifically does not listen to gossip. He seeks excuses for absent individuals and does not believe the lies spread by gossips and backbiters about them, because his sound mind and mature soul automatically prevent him from engaging in anything resembling gossip or backbiting.

- The hostile relative: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in a sacred hadith: “The best charity is that given to a hostile relative.” This refers to a relative who harbors hatred toward you out of jealousy, or simply because of aversion toward you for any reason. A person of noble character seeks excuses for this type of disturbed relative—whether psychologically disturbed, weak-willed, or short-sighted—and overlooks their faults to the best of his ability. Charity in this context does not necessarily mean giving money to the hostile relative; it can instead consist of ignoring their jealousy and hatred, turning a blind eye to some of their childish mistakes, and refraining from exposing their bad nature and corrupt character to other strangers.

- Good opinion: Suspicion is a safeguard for a person of noble character in a corrupt environment and toward hostile strangers. However, he maintains a cautiously optimistic outlook in every normal environment.
