From Drying Tehran's Sources to Taiwan's Balances
Iran is facing mounting pressure in the wake of the recent visit by the Chinese president to the United States and the direct negotiations with President Donald Trump on overarching global issues, foremost among them the forms of Chinese support for Tehran and the mechanisms for circumventing international sanctions.
These understandings have yielded an agreement stipulating the freezing of Iranian assets in Beijing, and a halt to the purchase of Iranian oil in exchange for strategic benefits and incentives granted to Beijing, the details of which have not been made public.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani recently expressed deep frustration over the freezing of his country’s funds by an ally that was believed to continue providing economic cover, thereby confronting the Iranian government with pivotal choices: accepting international pressure, allowing for the formation of a temporary technocratic government to oversee fair elections in which all Iranians can participate, and submitting the nuclear file to full international supervision with the aim of dismantling it.

In this context, Arab and Islamic countries have no choice but to support international efforts aimed at ending sources of political corruption in the region and thwarting Iran’s nuclear project. It is clear that the most central issue for the Chinese leadership remains Taiwan, a file that also saw mutual understandings shaping the future approach between the two superpowers.
