Trump Reiterates Promise to Americans: $5,000 for Each Adult if Republicans Win Congress
US President Donald Trump renewed his pledge on Saturday to give every adult American $5,000 if Republicans win control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections scheduled for November 3, linking the plan’s implementation to customs revenue and economic performance.
Trump posted a video from his office on the platform X, stating that a Republican victory in Congress would enable him to implement what he called the “Trump bonus,” adding, “I will give every adult citizen in the United States $5,000.”
He said the United States is “doing great” under Republican leadership, noting that his administration is collecting “huge amounts” in customs duties and achieving what he described as historic economic success.
Conversely, Trump warned that a Democratic victory would lead to tax hikes and a sharp economic downturn, likening the potential fallout to a “disaster like 1929.” He framed the election as a choice between “$5,000 in every citizen’s pocket” and continued economic growth on one hand, and Democratic policies on the other.
He cited what he called the “Veterans Bonus” of $1,776, which he said was paid to military personnel in December 2025, noting that criticisms preceding its distribution did not prevent his administration from implementing it.
Trump estimated the cost of the “Trump bonus” at around $1 trillion, and mentioned $21 trillion in investments in the United States over the past 15 months, without providing details in the video on how these figures were calculated or how the payments would be funded.
Trump first introduced the idea last September at a Republican Party conference in Dallas, comparing the payment to a company distributing dividends to its shareholders and emphasizing the need to spend the money within the United States.
Following that, Vice President J.D. Vance said the plan would not include the wealthy and proposed funding it through customs revenue, while Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio announced his readiness to draft legislation to pass the “Trump bonus” after the midterm elections.
Based on the number of adults in the United States, the cost of giving $5,000 to each adult citizen could exceed $1.2 trillion. Implementing such a program would require congressional approval, as Congress holds the constitutional authority over federal spending.
Trump’s renewal of his pledge comes amid a fierce race for control of both chambers of Congress ahead of the November 3 elections, which will determine the makeup of the congressional majority during the second half of his term.
