US Vice President: Deal with Iran Possible if It Changes Its Behavior

-Our policy toward Tehran over the next two months will be based on its actions, not its statements

US Vice President JD Vance said on Tuesday that reaching an agreement with Iran to end the conflict remains “possible,” but he linked that to Tehran changing its behavior and fulfilling its commitments.

In press remarks, Vance clarified that the United States would determine its stance in the coming phase based on what Iran does on the ground, rather than on statements by its officials, adding that “Iran must improve its behavior before any agreement is concluded.”

He added, “If the Iranians change their approach toward the United States, then yes, there will be an opportunity for much better relations, but we must see a tangible change in their behavior.”

Vance noted that US policy toward Iran over the next two months would be based on field actions rather than statements, pointing to the continued targeting and attacks on commercial ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

He said that reports available to Washington indicate that Iranian officials opposed targeting the ships but failed to persuade hardliners to back down, considering that there is a clear absence of decision-making in Tehran.

US President Donald Trump announced last Saturday his rejection of an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and the implementation of a series of conditions before reopening the Strait of Hormuz, describing the proposal as “unacceptable.”

Vance’s remarks come as mediators are renewing their efforts this week to reach an agreement between the United States and Iran to end the conflict.
