Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal to Open Strait of Hormuz and End Fighting: Unacceptable

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that he rejects Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and end fighting in the region, affirming that Tehran seeks to reach an agreement but deeming the current proposal “unacceptable.”

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Trump said, according to Reuters, that Iran wants to reopen the Strait of Hormuz quickly due to the economic pressures it faces. He added that he is not opposed to reaching an agreement, but not under the currently proposed terms.

Trump emphasized that the United States, in his words, has “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz, noting that large volumes of oil are passing through the waterway. He stated that 29 ships exited the strait during the previous night.

He further added that the economic blockade imposed on Iran is achieving its objectives, arguing that Tehran is seeking an agreement due to the decline in its financial resources.

Reuters reported that Iran presented its initiative during the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York and conveyed it to the United States through Qatari intermediaries. The proposal calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending fighting in the region within seven days if an understanding is reached with Washington.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that the maritime passage could return to normal within seven days if the necessary conditions are met, emphasizing that the decision now rests with the United States.

According to the Associated Press, the Iranian proposal includes lifting the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, easing sanctions on Iranian oil sales, committing to a ceasefire that includes Lebanon, and resuming negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
