China and the United States Agree on the Necessity of Iran's Commitment to Not Developing Nuclear Weapons

China confirmed on Saturday that it had reached an agreement with Washington on the necessity for Iran to honor its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to the United States.

China’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement reported by the Xinhua News Agency, said that the Chinese president reached an eight-point consensus with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, including the principle that no state or entity may impose fees on the passage of vessels through international maritime straits.

The agency noted that the two presidents appreciated the positive role played by the China–U.S. trade dialogue mechanism and reached an arrangement to mutually reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods, as well as to extend the outcomes of the Kuala Lumpur talks held by the two countries last October.

It added that both sides agreed to open a dialogue on artificial intelligence to exchange experiences regarding the risks and benefits of this technology, with a new round of dialogue scheduled for next November. They also agreed to establish a communication channel on artificial intelligence incidents.

The agency reported that the two sides agreed to provide mutual support for China’s hosting of the informal meeting of leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Shenzhen next November, and for the United States’ hosting of the Group of Twenty (G20) summit in Miami next December.
