Kuwait’s Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood, Dr. Amthal Al-Huwaili, affirmed on Wednesday that enhancing the use of sign language is a fundamental pillar in empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their full participation in society.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the occasion of the International Day of Sign Languages, observed annually on September 23, Al-Huwaili stated that sign language is a right to communication and an important bridge to participation and empowerment, and it must be present across all aspects of life.

She emphasized the importance of expanding the use of sign language in government entities, institutions, and various services, thereby facilitating persons with disabilities’ access to information and services without barriers.

She noted that raising community awareness about the importance of sign language, along with supporting initiatives and programs aimed at promoting its use, contribute to consolidating the concept of social inclusion and equal opportunities.

Al-Huwaili highlighted that Kuwait consistently prioritizes the rights of persons with disabilities, affirming the continued efforts of the Public Authority for Persons with Disabilities to develop services and strengthen coordination with relevant entities, thereby achieving greater empowerment and participation.
