G7 calls on Iran to halt arms supply to the Houthis... and warns against escalation

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) called on Iran on Tuesday to cease its arming and support for the Houthi militia in Yemen, stating that the continuation of this support constitutes a "dangerous pattern of escalation" that threatens to exacerbate the conflict, undermine international trade, and increase global economic instability.

In a statement issued following a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States said that "Iran’s reprehensible actions represent a dangerous pattern of escalation and threaten to further exacerbate the conflict," adding that such actions constitute a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

The G7 foreign ministers condemned in the strongest terms the "unacceptable attacks" carried out by the Houthis against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, noting that they "view the situation in Yemen as an unacceptable threat to regional stability and security, as well as to global energy security."

They also called on the Houthis to immediately cease all military operations, threats, and attacks against civilian vessels, urging the group to return to the political process "in good faith."
